The Vietnamese capital of Hanoi ceremoniously received a GEN-350, an atmospheric water generator that produces water from the air, during the opening on Saturday night (October 27, 2018) of a month-long exhibition at the city’s Ly Thai To square. Vietnam, the fifteenth most populated country in the world with some 96 million people, has long struggled with a shortage of a suitable drinking water supply for its citizens. Although two thirds of the population live along the country’s three primary river basins of Hai Binh, Mekong Delta and Dong Nai, several factors such as water pollution and a lack of both necessary infrastructure and financial resources significantly hinder Vietnam’s ability to provide fresh water.
The exhibition on Saturday night, sponsored by the Israeli embassy and the Hanoi People’s committee, showcased the contribution of Israeli agro and water technology to Vietnam in celebration of 25 years of diplomatic relations between both countries.
The GEN-350 is a technological innovation of Watergen, an Israeli company that serves as a global leader in producing fresh drinking water from the air. Watergen’s efforts to make clean water available around the world earned the company its place on the World Economic Forum’s list of the world’s top technology pioneers in 2018.
“We thought carefully about how to celebrate the anniversary of diplomatic relations and decided to focus the event issue on futuristic technology and innovation from Israel,” explained Israeli Ambassador to Vietnam, Nadav Eshcar. “Startups and supreme technology has been at the core of interest in the relationship between Israel and Vietnam over the past two years, and Watergen’s GEN-350 is one of several such innovations that stand out,” the ambassador continued. “The generator is not connected to any water source but can still make water out of air. This is technology that people can see and get amazed by.”
The technology of the GEN-350 comes in handy for Hanoi, a city in which 80% of its water supply comes from underwater reservoirs tainted with ammonia concentrations that are 5-10 times the acceptable amount.
Earlier this year, the GEN-350 went through three successful pilots with Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security, each at a separate region of the country with distinct weather conditions. The purpose of testing the GEN-350 in three separate locations in Vietnam was to measure the quality of the water produced by the machine in various weather conditions. SGS, an accredited inspection laboratory in Vietnam, has already carried out two tests of the GEN-350 and found the water to be of good and solid quality for drinking.
With a weight of just 800 kilograms, the GEN-350 is easily transportable and can be installed anywhere. It is provided with an internal water treatment system and needs no infrastructure to operate except for electricity. The GEN-350 can produce up to 600 liters of water per day, and as a transportable machine, it is specially designed to assist people in locations that are not easily accessible.
Philanthropist Dr. Michael Mirilashvili is the visionary behind Watergen’s goal to make clean and safe drinking water available to every human being around the world. In accordance with that mission, President Mirilashvili has contributed two GEN-350 units to the people of Hanoi. Also, Watergen is already coordinating with organisations in Vietnam’s public and private sectors to further implement its innovative technology.
“Watergen is honored to share the benefits of Israeli water technology to the people of Vietnam by providing them with a fundamental lifeline of drinking water,” said Dr. Mirilashvili. “The GEN-350 will undoubtedly improve the quality of life and health of the Vietnamese people who are in need of safe and clean drinking water.”
The GEN-350 unit will stay in the city square for a month and will then be handed over to the Hanoi People’s Committee.
